💡 When I worked as a Web Dev I met some incredibly smart people. They all coded, most of them were self taught and none of them had degrees. In short, they all had really successful well-paid careers.
🏫 Prior to this, I worked as a secondary school teacher in a small town in Notts. I came across kids on a daily occurrence who didn’t have the belief to dream, never mind to follow their dreams.
❌ Some believed they couldn’t get a job “in a city” and the thought of going to university was one they couldn’t comprehend. Changing that fixed mindset is a huge challenge many teachers face.
But the world is a different place now. Remote tech jobs mean you can work from your home town. And you don’t need a degree to get a tech job, that’s two huge psychological barriers removed.
I wish I had a time machine and I could go back and point out these future revelations to those kids back then. Or a crystal ball to show them how the world will change.
Instead, we must focus on the here and now and the kids and young adults of today. If you are not sure what to do with your life, try learning to code and see where it takes you.
I’m pro Uni btw and this is not a dig at higher education.
